About Homocysteine
Homocysteine is an amino acid that accumulates in the blood when B vitamin levels (B6, B12, folate) are insufficient or certain genetic variants impair its metabolism. Elevated homocysteine directly damages artery walls and is associated with significantly increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and cognitive decline — yet it remains routinely absent from standard cardiovascular panels. The good news: it is largely correctable with targeted B vitamin supplementation.
