About Non-HDL Cholesterol
Non-HDL cholesterol captures all atherogenic particles — LDL, VLDL, IDL, and Lp(a) — in a single number calculated by subtracting HDL from total cholesterol. It is a more complete risk marker than LDL alone because it includes cholesterol carried by triglyceride-rich particles, which are particularly harmful in people with diabetes or metabolic syndrome. Major guidelines now recommend Non-HDL as the primary treatment target over LDL-C in high-risk individuals.
